Snopes.com Uncovered As Hoax Updated: November 14, 2008, 5:43 pm
MONKCHUNK, PENNSYLVANIASnopes.com, the website dedicated to validating or debunking Internet rumors has, itself, been debunked today. The founder, Les Makaddle, came clean after years of misleading Snopes users.
"Look, it started as a joke. I had friends forwarding me the most ridiculous emails…do we really believe there are AIDS filled syringes in gas pump handles? And the one about women getting sprayed with perfume testers filled with sedatives in parking lots and then robbed – I don't even think James Bond has that s@$%! I just figured if my friends were going to be such gullible assholes I'd go along…I didn't realize that there was a nation of gullible assholes looking for a leader!" Mr. Makaddle's deception has opened him up to possible class-action lawsuits. "When a guy came to my door asking to see my breasts, I thought…OH NO! I've seen this on Snopes.com…you're not conducting door-to-door mammograms! You just want to see my breasts!" That's when stay-at-home-mom Cindy Lewhu turned the man away. "What if he had really been conducting free mammograms, I could have saved a LOT of money, what with the price of gas and the costs of having an actual doctor conduct the mammogram! I want that money back!" Cindy Lewhu and hundreds of other women who were possibly duped out of free door-to-door mammograms are joining the suit. So what does the future hold for Mr. Makaddle and his fake, fake news story debunking site? "I figure, I'll wait a couple of weeks, then start an email forward about the government's attempt to defame my character to turn attention away from the bailout…that aughta do it." ![]() Email this story | Write a better story
